What is a Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure aimed at changing the shape, size, or appearance of the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic reasons, to improve facial harmony, or for functional reasons, such as improving breathing by correcting structural issues like a deviated septum. Rhinoplasty involves making incisions, typically inside the nostrils or across the base of the nose, and adjusting the bone, cartilage, and tissue to achieve the desired result. The procedure can alter the nose’s size, width, tip, or profile, and recovery usually involves some swelling and bruising, with final results becoming visible after several months.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. Some touch ups can be performed under local anesthesia. Depending on the technique, incisions are made inside the nostrils or across the columella. For cosmetic adjustments, the bone, cartilage, and tissue of the nose are reshaped to achieve the desired appearance. In cases where breathing is a concern, structural issues like a deviated septum may also be corrected. Once the changes are made, the incisions are closed, and the nose is supported with a splint. The procedure typically takes two to four hours, and patients usually experience swelling and bruising during recovery, with final results visible after several months.

Types of Rhinoplasty Surgery

Closed Rhinoplasty

All incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars. This approach is used for less complex changes to the nose, such as reshaping the tip or reducing the size.

Open Rhinoplasty

This involves a small incision across the columella, which is the tissue between the nostrils, in addition to internal nostril incisions. This technique is ideal for more extensive reshaping or correcting complex issues, as it allows the surgeon to better visualize the structural changes needed and act with greater precision. The result is a more effective plan and execution of the procedure with more accurate results— especially when addressing intricate concerns. For this procedure, the external scarring is usually minimal and almost invisible.

Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty

Also known as piezoelectric rhinoplasty, this technique uses ultrasonic sound waves rather than traditional instruments, to gently reshape the bones of the nose. This technique is more precise and causes less trauma to surrounding tissue, allowing for faster healing.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is a secondary surgery performed to correct or refine the results of a previous rhinoplasty. It addresses any dissatisfaction you may have or issues that may have developed over time, such as breathing problems or changes in appearance.

Liquid Rhinoplasty

Also known as a non-surgical rhinoplasty, liquid rhinoplasty is a procedure that uses injectable fillers (such as hyaluronic acid) to alter the shape of the nose without the need for surgery. It’s quick, minimally invasive, and requires little downtime. The results of this procedure are temporary, typically lasting between six to 12 months, and can be refreshed with touch-ups as needed. It’s ideal for individuals seeking a subtle, temporary change without the need for surgery. However, not every nose shape is suited for this treatment.

Rhinoplasty Before & After Photos

When considering rhinoplasty, it’s helpful to review several before-and-after photos to get a better sense of the possible results, with the understanding that they are examples and not a guarantee of your personal outcome. Dr. Zelhof specializes in creating natural-looking results and offers options to help enhance your unique facial features in a way that feels both balanced and harmonious. Since nose shapes and sizes vary greatly, each result is customized according to your aesthetic goals and to suit your individual anatomy, ensuring a look that complements your face.

Post-Operative Care after a Rhinoplasty

Bandages

After surgery, splints will be placed inside the nostrils and on the nose to support its new shape and protect it while it heals. These are typically removed within a week, although some swelling and bruising may persist for a few weeks after the procedure. To help reduce the swelling, you can apply cold compresses or pads, which can provide relief and promote a quicker recovery.

Showering and Washing

You can usually shower a few days after surgery, but avoid getting your nose splint or the incision sites wet. After the removal of the splint, be gentle when washing your face and use a mild cleanser. Pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it.

Sleep

Sleep with your head elevated, using pillows to avoid putting pressure on your nose. It’s essential to avoid sleeping on your stomach during the initial healing period to prevent injury.

What to Avoid After a Rhinoplasty

  • Avoid blowing your nose, as it can disrupt the healing process.
  • Refrain from smoking and alcohol, as they can impair healing and increase the risk of complications.
  • Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid swimming or hot tubs, as heat and chlorine may interfere with healing.

Activities and Exercise

Avoid strenuous physical activities, heavy lifting, or vigorous exercise for at least four to six weeks after surgery. Light walking can be resumed soon after the procedure, but you should consult your surgeon before resuming intense exercise.

General Healing

Bruising and most of the swelling typically subside within two weeks and can be easily covered with makeup. However, residual swelling may persist for several months. Around 70% of the swelling usually resolves after three months. Full results can take up to a year as the nose continues to settle and refine, gradually revealing the final shape. Following post-op instructions and attending follow-up appointments ensures optimal healing and results.

Risks and Potential Complications After a Rhinoplasty

There are some potential risks and complications after this surgery that need to be considered . These include bleeding, infection, and possible breathing issues. Asymmetry can also develop due to unexpected tissue retraction, altering the final results. If significant asymmetry or irregularity persists, revision surgery can be offered, sometimes under local anesthesia. Following Dr. Zelhof’s post-operative care instructions can significantly reduce these risks and promote a smooth recovery.

How Much Does a Rhinoplasty Cost?

The cost of a primary rhinoplasty starts at $12,000, while secondary rhinoplasty (revision surgery) starts at $17,000. This price typically covers operating room rental fees, surgical materials, anesthesia, post-operative care, and the surgery itself.

What is Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty (Liquid Rhinoplasty) ?

Non-surgical rhinoplasty, also known as liquid rhinoplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure that uses injectable fillers (like hyaluronic acid) to reshape the nose without surgery. This procedure is typically used to smooth out bumps, lift the nose tip, correct asymmetry, or enhance the overall shape of the nose. Unlike traditional rhinoplasty, liquid rhinoplasty doesn’t involve any incisions or recovery time, making it a quicker and less invasive option. However, not every nose shape is suited for this treatment. Furthermore, it is important to be aware that the results are temporary, usually lasting six to 12 months, and may require touch-ups to maintain the desired appearance.
