What is Fat Grafting (Fat Transfer Surgery)?
Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer surgery or lipofilling, is a cosmetic procedure that involves removing excess fat from one area of the body with liposuction and then transferring it to another area of the body to enhance volume, improve contours, or restore fullness. The procedure is commonly used to rejuvenate the face and hands, enhance the breasts, and correct imperfections such as scars or depressions in the skin. The fat is purified and carefully injected into the targeted area, where it integrates with the surrounding tissue. Since the procedure uses the patient’s own fat, there is no risk of allergic reactions or rejection, making it a natural and effective option for body contouring.
Types/Options of Fat Grafting
Facial Fat Grafting
This procedure involves transferring fat from areas like the abdomen, thighs, or flanks to the face in order to restore lost volume, smooth out wrinkles, or enhance facial contours. It’s commonly used for areas like the cheeks, in the nasolabial folds, under the eyes, and around the temples to achieve complete facial rejuvenation.
Breast Fat Grafting
Fat is taken from one area ( most commonly the abdomen or thighs) and injected into the breasts to increase their volume or improve the shape, and can be used as an alternative to breast implants or for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. Breast augmentation with fat transfer cannot replace implants when dealing with large volume and is usually indicated for smaller augmentations (half a cup to a cup maximum). The procedure can also be used for breast contouring- like placing more volume with fat in the upper pole of natural breasts— or to give a more natural contour to breast implants.
Hand Fat Grafting
This type of fat grafting adds volume to the back of the hands as a way to rejuvenate their appearance. It is used in cases where age has caused the hands to lose surface fat and skin elasticity, thus restoring a more youthful appearance.
Body Contouring Fat Grafting
Fat is removed from areas with excess fat, such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs, and is injected into areas of the body that may need added volume, such as the hips, knees, or upper arms. This helps create a more balanced, contoured body shape.
Scar and Deformity Correction
Fat grafting can also be used to improve the appearance of scars or correct deformities from trauma, surgery, or congenital conditions. The fat helps smooth and fill in uneven or depressed areas, leading to a more natural appearance.

Post-Operative Care after Fat Grafting
Facial and Hand Fat Grafting
Following facial or hand fat grafting, light bandages are placed on the incision sites. A compression garment is sometimes needed on the donor area from where the fat was taken, to support the healing process. Refrain from putting pressure or massaging the injected area(s) for a few weeks to promote the survival of the grafted fat. Avoid strenuous activities and exercise for at least two to three weeks. You can shower with care after 48 hours but avoid putting direct water pressure on the face. General healing involves swelling and bruising, which should subside within one to two weeks. Full recovery with complete subsiding of swelling takes about one to three months. Scarring is minimal and typically hidden and located in inconspicuous areas and the natural folds of the skin.
Breast Fat Grafting
Bandages and a supportive bra will be used after breast fat grafting to reduce swelling. A compression garment is needed on the donor area, from where the fat was taken , to support the healing process. It is recommended that you sleep with your upper body elevated to minimize swelling. Refrain from heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least four to six weeks. Showers are allowed after 48 hours, but avoid soaking the chest in a bath. Avoid wearing tight bras or clothing that could irritate the area. Swelling and bruising are normal but should improve in two to three weeks. Full recovery typically takes two to three months with few visible scars as they are usually hidden in the breast folds.
How Much Does a Fat Grafting Cost?
The cost of fat grafting typically starts at $7 500 and depends on the volume transferred and the areas being treated. The price typically covers operating room rental fees, surgical materials, anesthesia, post-operative care, and the surgery itself. It’s important to schedule a consultation to get an accurate estimate tailored to your specific needs where you can also inquire about financing options, if needed, to help manage the cost.
