What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances used to restore lost volume, smooth out wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. They are commonly used in aesthetic medicine to rejuvenate the skin and create  a more youthful appearance. Different types of dermal fillers are used for different purposes, such as plumping lips, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, enhancing cheekbones and jawline, and correcting loss of volume in the face due  to aging. The effects usually last between six months to two years, depending on the type used and the area injected.

How Long do Dermal Fillers Last?

The longevity of dermal fillers depends on the type of filler used, the treatment area, and each person’s individual metabolism.  Factors like lifestyle, metabolism, and injection technique also influence how long the fillers last. Regular touch-ups help maintain optimal results.

  • Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, typically last six to 18 months.
  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) fillers like Radiesse can last up to 12 to 18 months.
  • Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) fillers like  Sculptra stimulate collagen production and can last over two years.

Produits de comblement dermique ou Botox?

Dermal fillers and Botox are both popular treatments for reducing the signs of aging, but they work in different ways. Fillers are gels that restore lost volume, smooth deep wrinkles, and enhance features like lips and cheeks, with immediate results lasting six  months to two years. Botox, on the other hand, is a liquid product that can  relax the muscles and soften hyperactive expression lines like crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, or platysmal bands in the neck (Nefertiti lift). Results usually take a few days to appear and typically last three to four months.

Wondering which one is right for you? There are some basic guidelines. If you’re looking to restore volume, plump your lips or fill in deep lines, we recommend that you consider  dermal fillers, which can also be used to perform non-surgical Liquid Rhinoplasty. Botox, on the other hand, is best for preventing and smoothing fine lines caused by facial expressions,  and works by reducing underlying muscle hyperactivity like frowning. Many patients combine both for a more balanced, youthful look.

Procedural Details of Dermal Fillers

Getting dermal fillers is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that typically takes around 30 minutes. First, your provider will clean the treatment area after which they may apply a numbing cream to minimize discomfort on the treatment area. Using a fine needle or cannula, the filler is carefully injected into targeted areas such as the lips, cheeks, or nasolabial folds. You may feel slight pressure or a mild pinch, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated., Minor  swelling or bruising may occur afterwards,  but most patients can resume normal activities immediately. Results are instant , with the full effects visible once swelling fully subsides. Touch-ups may be needed for optimal results.

Types of Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers

These fillers are perfect for adding natural-looking volume, smoothing out fine lines and keeping your skin hydrated for a youthful glow. Popular brands like Juvederm and Restylane last six to 18 months before gradually dissolving. It is the most used product.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) Fillers

Thicker than HA fillers, these provide longer-lasting volume and help stimulate natural collagen production. Brands like Radiesse can improve wrinkles and facial contours for 12 to 18 months, giving your skin a firmer, more youthful look.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) Fillers

If you’re looking for a long-term solution to volume loss, Sculptra works by gradually boosting your body’s own natural collagen. Results appear over time and can last more than two  years, making it a great option for deep wrinkles and facial rejuvenation.

Autologous Fat Transfer

This natural filler uses your own fat, taken from areas like your stomach or thighs, to restore volume to the face. It’s a long-lasting solution, commonly used to restore volume loss during facial rejuvenation procedures like a Facelift.

Lip Augmentation before and after. Correction of asymmetry. Result after three months.

Post-Treatment Care after Dermal Fillers

Bandages

Bandages are not normally required after dermal filler treatments. If needed, ice packs can help reduce swelling, but generally, no special bandaging is necessary.

Showering & Washing

You can shower and wash your face as usual, but avoid hot water and vigorous scrubbing for the first few days. Gently pat your face dry with a soft towel.

Sleep

To prevent putting pressure on treated areas, it’s best to sleep on your back with your head elevated for the first night after treatment. This will help minimize swelling and allow the filler to settle properly.

What to Avoid After Dermal Fillers

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and always wear SPF 30 or higher to protect the skin from UV damage.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it can worsen swelling and bruising.
  • Wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup to allow the skin to settle.
  • Avoid touching or massaging the treated area unless advised otherwise.

Activities & Exercise

For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid strenuous activities and exercise that could increase blood flow to the face, as this may lead to swelling or bruising. After that, lighter activities are fine.

General Healing

It’s normal to experience mild swelling, bruising, or redness right after the procedure, which will peak around 48 hours after the treatment and will usually resolve within a few days.   You will begin to notice gradual improvement over time, as swelling decreases and the filler settles. If you experience severe pain, signs of infection or skin discoloration, seek medical attention promptly.

Recovery Period After Dermal Fillers

The recovery period after dermal fillers is typically quick, with most people experiencing minimal downtime. Immediately following  the procedure, mild swelling, redness, or bruising may occur and peak around 48 hours post- treatment, usually resolving within a few days. You can gently wash your face and resume light activities right away, though it’s best to avoid strenuous exercise or hot showers for the first couple of days. By the end of the first week, most swelling and bruising will have subsided, and the full results will begin to show after about two weeks. Overall, recovery is fast, and most people can return to normal activities right away.
