What is CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

CO₂ laser resurfacing is an advanced skin rejuvenation treatment that uses a fractionated carbon dioxide laser to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and uneven skin tone. This procedure stimulates collagen production with an exacting technique that removes the outer layers of damaged skin, creating a smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking appearance. It is an effective option for treating sun damage, acne scars, and the signs of aging and has customizable settings to suit different skin types and concerns.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing for Acne Scars

CO₂ laser resurfacing smooths acne scars by removing damaged skin and boosting collagen production, revealing clearer, more even skin.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing for Sun Damage

This treatment reduces sunspots, fine lines, and uneven texture by removing damaged skin cells and promoting fresh, healthy regeneration.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing for Improved Skin Texture

CO₂ laser resurfacing refines rough skin, minimizes pores, and enhances elasticity for a smoother, more radiant complexion.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing for Under Eye Bags

By tightening loose skin and stimulating collagen, CO₂ laser resurfacing reduces under-eye bags, fine lines, and puffiness for a refreshed look.

CO2 Laser Procedure

The CO₂ laser procedure begins with a numbing of the skin using a topical anesthetic or local anesthesia. The laser is then used to  deliver controlled energy to remove damaged skin layers and stimulate collagen production. Depending on the treatment area and intensity, the session can take 30 to 90 minutes.  skin may appear red and swollen afterwards and patients can expect  a healing period ranging from a few days to a couple of weeks. Gradual improvements continue as new, healthier skin emerges.

Full Facial Rejuvenation

A full facial rejuvenation with CO₂ laser resurfacing is a comprehensive treatment designed to address multiple signs of aging across the entire face. This approach targets wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin texture, and skin laxity for a refreshed, youthful appearance. The procedure can be customized to focus on key areas such as the periorbital or perioral region (eye or mouth area), the midface, or  the neck. Other  treatments such as Botox or dermal fillers can be combined with CO₂ laser resurfacing, to smooth fine lines and restore volume. This personalized combination of treatments works together to improve skin tone, texture, and elasticity, giving you a balanced, rejuvenated look with natural, long-lasting results.

Types of CO2 Lasers

Fully Ablative Laser

This is a  powerful treatment that removes the entire outer layer of the skin, delivering dramatic results for deep wrinkles, scars, and severe sun damage. It requires a longer recovery time but offers significant skin rejuvenation.

Fractional Laser

This treatment targets  a fraction of the skin, leaving the surrounding areas intact for faster healing. It effectively treats fine lines, acne scars, and uneven texture with less downtime than fully ablative lasers.

CO2 Laser Before & After Photos

Before-and-after photos of CO₂ laser resurfacing showcase the skin’s transformation, including reduced wrinkles, improved texture, and a more even tone. These images highlight the treatment’s ability to smooth fine lines, minimize scars, and rejuvenate the skin. While results vary, they help set realistic expectations for the procedure’s effectiveness. Individual outcomes may differ.

Post-Operative Care after CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Bandages

Bandages are not usually required after CO₂ laser resurfacing. A topical ointment and cold gauzes may be applied during the healing period for comfort. However, you may be advised to avoid touching or rubbing the treated areas to prevent irritation and infection.

Showering & Washing

You can shower normally, but avoid scrubbing, rubbing, or massaging the treated areas. Be gentle when cleansing your face to avoid applying pressure to the skin.

Sleep

You can sleep normally after the procedure, but it’s recommended that you  keep your head elevated to reduce swelling and improve healing.

What to Avoid After CO2 Laser Resurfacing

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and always wear sunscreen to protect healing skin.
  • Refrain from using harsh skincare products, exfoliants, or any products containing retinoids until your skin has fully healed.
  • Do not pick at or peel the skin, as this can cause scarring or infection.

Activities & Exercise

Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or vigorous exercise for at least 48 hours to allow the skin to heal properly and prevent excessive swelling or irritation.

General Healing

Redness, swelling, and peeling are common in the first few days after the procedure. Full healing typically takes several weeks, with gradual improvements visible as collagen production increases. Be sure to follow Dr. Zelhof’s aftercare instructions to ensure optimal results.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing Recovery

Recovery after CO₂ laser resurfacing varies depending on the intensity of the treatment. In the first few days, you may experience redness, swelling, and mild discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed ointments or over-the-counter pain relievers. Peeling and dryness are common as the skin heals, and it’s important to avoid picking at the skin to prevent scarring.

After laser treatment, it’s important to care for your skin properly to ensure healing and comfort. It is recommended that you begin  by covering the treated areas with a protective ointment, such as Vaseline. Applying cold compresses to the face will  help reduce discomfort and swelling.

A simple way  to  create cold compresses is to take a clean salad bowl, wash it thoroughly and fill it with six cups of cold water, 1/8 cup of white vinegar, and ice cubes. Soak several washcloths (or gauze pads) in this solution and store the bowl in the refrigerator. Apply the cold cloths to the treated areas of your face to relieve discomfort and swelling. When the cloths warm up, replace them with fresh cold ones.

You can repeat this process as often as needed, but remember that cold compresses will remove the protective ointment, so be sure to reapply a generous layer of Vaseline (or the recommended product) after each treatment. For the first five to six  days, it’s essential to keep your face clean and well-moisturized to promote healing.

Most swelling and redness will subside within a week, though complete healing can take several weeks. During recovery, it’s crucial to avoid sun exposure and use gentle skincare products to protect the newly resurfaced skin. Final  results are usually  visible after  a few months as collagen production continues, providing smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

How Much Does a CO2 Laser Resurfacing Treatment Cost?

The cost of CO₂ laser resurfacing typically starts at $1,500, depending on the size of the treated area and the complexity of the procedure. This price generally includes the treatment itself, any necessary numbing agents, and post-treatment care. Additional costs may apply for follow-up visits or specialized aftercare products.
