What is a Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure designed to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to create a smaller, more proportionate breast size. This surgery is often performed to alleviate physical discomfort caused by large breasts, such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, skin irritation, andposture difficulties. It also improves the aesthetic appearance of the breasts, providing a more balanced and youthful silhouette. In addition to physical benefits, breast reduction can enhance self-esteem and confidence by creating breasts that better suit the patient’s body proportions and aesthetic goals.
Breast Reduction and Lift
A breast lift (mastopexy) and breast reduction are both surgical procedures aimed at improving the appearance of the breasts, but they serve different purposes. A breast lift focuses on lifting and tightening the breast tissue to restore a youthful, perkier shape, addressing sagging or drooping due to factors like aging, pregnancy, or gravity. However, it does not significantly reduce the size of the breasts. On the other hand, breast reduction involves removing excess tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size of the breasts, often aimed at alleviating physical discomfort like back, neck, and shoulder pain. While a breast reduction will also has a lifting effect due to the removal of excess weight, its primary focus is on size reduction, not just elevation. In some cases, both procedures can be combined to achieve a more proportionate, lifted, and rejuvenated breast appearance.
Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction surgery begins with anesthesia to ensure comfort. Incisions are made around the areola, extending downward and along the breast crease, depending on the amount of tissue to be removed. Excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed, and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped. The nipple and areola are repositioned if needed, and the incisions are closed with invisible sutures under the skin. The procedure typically lasts one to two hours, and patients can usually go home the same day. Swelling and discomfort are common post-surgery effects, with full recovery taking a few weeks and final results visible in a few months.
Breast Reduction Before & After Photos
When considering a breast reduction, it’s helpful to review breast reduction before- and-after photos to get a better idea of the results possible. They are not, however, a guarantee of your personal results. Since breast shapes and sizes vary, final results will depend on factors such as breast footprint, skin elasticity, and overall body proportions. Dr Zelhof customizes each result to suit your individual anatomy and reflect your unique aesthetic goals, ensuring a look that complements your body.
Post-Operative Care after a Breast Reduction Surgery
Bandages
After surgery, compressive bandages are kept for on for two days. Then, a special post-operative surgical bra is applied to support the breasts and reduce swelling. It is typically worn four to six weeks following surgery to aid in the healing process.
Showering & washing
Showers can typically be resumed after two days, but it is important to avoid direct water pressure on the incision areas. Gently cleanse the area around the incisions and follow instructions for wound care.
Sleep
You can sleep on your back or your side, wearing the post-operative bra without any restrictions. Sleeping on the belly is not recommended until after full recovery.
What to Avoid After a Breast Reduction
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the breast area until complete healing to prevent irritation or wound complications.
- Refrain from wearing tight bras or clothing that might put pressure on the healing tissues. A soft, supportive surgical bra is recommended.
- Protect your scars from direct sun exposure, as it can cause pigmentation changes. Use sunscreen once the incisions have healed sufficiently.
Activities & Exercise
Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise for four to six weeks to prevent strain on the healing tissues. Gentle movements and light walking are encouraged once cleared by your healthcare provider.
General Healing
Swelling and bruising are common during the first few weeks, but they gradually subside. Most patients return to normal activities within four to six weeks. Following Dr Zelhof’s aftercare instructions is crucial for optimal healing and the best results.
Breast Reduction Recovery
Recovery from breast reduction surgery typically takes about three weeks, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for four to six weeks to allow for proper healing. Patients often report minimal pain levels for this procedure as it only targets superficial tissue (not underlying muscle or bones). In the first few days, swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common, but these symptoms gradually improve after the first48 hours with rest and proper care. Patients are encouraged to wear a post-operative surgical bra for scar support and to reduce swelling. Full results become visible once the swelling completely subsides, and the breasts settle into their new shape. Following Dr Zelhof’s aftercare instructions carefully is key to ensuring the best outcome and a smooth recovery process.
Breast Reduction Scars
Breast reduction scars tend to fade over time, becoming much less visible as they heal, especially on fair skin. The most common scar pattern involves an incision around the areola, extending vertically down the breast, and sometimes along the breast crease. Proper post-operative care, including keeping the scars moisturized and protected from the sun, can help minimize their appearance. Although scarring is a permanent after-effect, the improvement in breast shape, size, and comfort typically outweighs the cosmetic concerns of the scars.
How Much Does a Breast Reduction Surgery Cost?
The cost of a breast reduction starts at $13,000. This price typically covers operating room rental fees, surgical materials, anesthesia, post-operative care, and the surgery itself. It’s important to schedule a consultation to get an accurate estimate tailored to your specific needs, and inquire about financing options if needed, to help manage the cost.
