What is a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?
A breast lift (or mastopexy) is a surgical procedure aimed at raising and reshaping sagging breasts to restore a more youthful and firm appearance. The procedure involves removing excess skin, tightening the remaining tissue, and repositioning the areolas to a higher, more anatomically pleasing position.
A breast lift is often performed when factors like aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss have affected the look of the breasts. It can be done alone or in combination with a breast augmentation for added volume and fullness. The result is firmer, uplifted breasts with improved contour.
How Long Does a Breast Lift Last?
A breast lift typically lasts between 10 to 15 years, although the results can vary depending on factors such as aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and genetics. While the procedure provides long-lasting improvements, it does not prevent changes caused by the natural aging process or changes in breast shape due to fluctuations in body weight, both of which can cause the breasts to gradually sag again over time. Maintaining a stable weight and practicing good skincare can help extend the results of a breast lift.
Breast Lift Procedure
The procedure begins with a general anesthesia. Incisions are then made based on the type of lift chosen , with preoperative markings done while you are awake and standing. Excess skin is removed, and the underlying tissue is tightened and reshaped to lift the breasts and improve firmness. The areolas may also be repositioned to a higher, more youthful location. Once the desired shape is achieved, Dr. Zelhof carefully closes the incisions with resorbable sutures hidden inside the scars and invisible to the eye. The procedure takes approximately one hour, and recovery involves some swelling and bruising. While you will see an immediate improvement following the lift, final results are fully noticeable once the swelling fully subsides around three months post-operatively.
Types of Breast Lifts
Different types of incisions may be recommended based on the degree of ptosis present. Dr. Zelhof will guide you through the options available and will explain to you which procedure is best suited to your unique anatomy.
Full Breast Lift “Anchor Lift”
The most comprehensive lift, the “Anchor Lift” involves creating incisions around the areola verticallydown to the breast crease, and finally, hidden along the crease itself. This procedure is ideal for moderate to severe sagging and provides the most significant reshaping and lifting.
Vertical Breast Lift “Lollipop Lift”
This procedure involves two scars: one around the areola to lift it, and one vertically to reshape the breast mound into a rounder shape. This technique is typically used when the distance from the lower edge of the areola to the crease is less than seven to nine centimeters.
Benelli Breast Lift “Periareolar Lift”
This method involves a circular incision around the areola and is typically used for mild sagging or when a patient wishes to reduce the diameter of a wide areola. It is ideal for patients who don’t require extensive reshaping but still want a slight correction in the size and position of the areolas. However, it is rarely used due to the more limited control over scarring.
Breast Lift Before & After Photos
When considering a breast lift, it’s helpful to review breast lift before-and-after photos to get a better idea of the possible results, keeping in mind that . the photos are not a guarantee of your own results but an example of what you can expect. Since breast shapes and sizes vary, final results will depend on factors such as breast footprint, skin elasticity, and overall body proportions. Dr. Zelhof customizes each result to suit your individual anatomy in accordance with your aesthetic goals, ensuring a look that complements your body.
Post-Operative Care after a Breast Lift
Bandages
After surgery, compressive bandages will be applied to reduce swelling and support the breasts. These are typically removed after two days and replaced with lighter dressings. A post-operative surgical bra must be worn day and night for four to six weeks to ensure proper healing and provide adequate support.
Showering & washing
You can typically shower two days after surgery once the compressive bandages are removed, being careful to avoid direct water pressure on your breasts or the incision areas. Use mild soap and pat the skin dry with a towel. Do not rub the area. White Steristrips will fall off on their own or can be removed after 10 days.
Sleep
Avoid sleeping on your stomach until you are fully healed. You can sleep on your side or your back with the support of the post-operative bra.
What to Avoid After a Breast Lift
- Avoid smoking and alcohol as they can interfere with the healing process.
- Do not expose your breasts to direct sunlight, as it can cause scarring.
- Avoid tight or constricting bras and clothing that could place unnecessary pressure on the healing tissue.
Activities & Exercise
Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for at least four to six weeks following the procedure. Light walking can be resumed shortly after surgery, but wait for your surgeon’s clearance before resuming intense exercise or physical activity.
General Healing
Initial swelling and bruising should subside within a few weeks. Full recovery and the final results of the breast lift may take a few months as the breasts settle into their new shape and position. Regular follow-up visits with personalized post-operative care will be provided to monitor healing and ensure the best possible outcome.
Breast Lift Scars
Scars are an inevitable part of the breast lift procedure, as incisions are made to remove excess skin and reshape the breasts. The location and visibility of the scars depend on the type of breast lift performed:
- Full Lift “Anchor Lift”: This technique involves incisions around the areola, vertically down the breast, and along the breast crease. It helps to comprehensively reshape the breasts to their most optimal shape.
- Vertical Lift “Lollipop Lift” : The incision runs around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease, leaving a lollipop-shaped scar.
- Benelli Lift “Periareolar Lift”: This technique uses a circular incision around the areola, leaving scarring confined to the areola’s edge.
Scars typically fade over time, though some redness may remain visible for months or even years. Proper aftercare, such as avoiding sun exposure and following the surgeon’s instructions can help reduce their visibility. Dr. Zelhof’s expertise and use of advanced surgical techniques, like the complete burial of sutures inside the scars and meticulous management of skin tension, goes a long way toward minimizing possible scarring. . As the healing process progresses, most scars become less noticeable and naturally blend in with the breast contours. The final, stable appearance of the scar is typically achieved after one to two years.
Risks and Potential Complications After a Breast Lift
Potential risks and complications after a breast lift may include hematoma, infection, and changes in nipple vitality and sensation, ranging from numbness to heightened sensitivity. Dr. Zelhof’s extensive experience in breast surgery ensures a safe, state-of-the-art approach that minimizes risks and maximizes results. Additionally, following proper aftercare and instructions can help reduce these risks, promote a smoother recovery, and support long-lasting results.
How Much Does a Breast Lift Cost?
The cost of a breast lift starts at $11,000. This price typically covers operating room rental fees, surgical materials, anesthesia, post-operative care, and the surgery itself. It’s important to schedule a consultation to get an accurate estimate tailored to your specific needs, and inquire about financing options if needed to help manage the cost.
Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation
A breast lift and breast augmentation are two distinct procedures with different goals. A breast lift focuses on repositioning and reshaping sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the tissue, resulting in a firmer, more youthful appearance. It doesn’t change the size of the breasts.
On the other hand, breast augmentation is performed to increase breast size and volume, involving the insertion of implants or, for augmentations of less than a cup, fat transfer to the breast. While a lift enhances the shape and position of the breasts, augmentation adds fullness. In some cases, both procedures can be combined to improve both appearance and volume.
